Great read; should be required reading for U.S. history and politics courses

5 stars for what I've read so far; it's an incredibly long read, I'm thinking it could take me all summer! This book is huge and heavy, I think newer copies are broken into 2 individually bound volumes. Easily holds my interest, hard to put down, and I can visualize the history as it's happening. Reading some events I never learned in school, or heard of otherwise. I became interested in this book when I saw a recent interview with Tom Hanks, he mentioned that he was reading this book, (said he would recommend, but it's not in print; Of course I came right to Amazon and found a like-new former library copy) and discovering that today's crazy politics have nothing on elections of the past.."I'm reading right now William Manchester's book The Glory and the Dream," Hanks said. "It's about American history from 1932 to 1972. This election now has nothing has nothing on the 1948 election for president. It has nothing on the 1952 election for president. It’s just the same thing over and over and over."
This book is well written, and the history quite interesting.. plus it's helping me see that maybe we aren't on the brink of destruction during this election cycle.

The Glory of William Manchester

William Manchester gives very balanced history of the United States of America from 1932 to 1972. He covers the good, the bad and the ugly of each political administration regardless of political affiliation. The book is written in a narrative style making it an enjoyable read. The history also includes popular tends and personalities of each period. My only disappointment with the book is that it seemed to end abruptly in not covering the final details of Nixon presidency. We are introduced to negotiations to end our involvement in the Viet Nam war, but missing is the U.S. final withdraw. We are given a behind the scene view of the Watergate scandal, what lead up to it and the subsequent cover up, but not Nixon's resignation. (No mention of Vice President Agnew resigning) Overall Manchester book is very thorough covering the period in great detail. I highly recommend this book.

Tom Hanks' comments prompted me to read this book - What a Ride!

Richly Enjoyable reading. On CBS This Morning, Tom Hanks mentioned he was reading The Glory and the Dream and how our turbulent presidential campaign is not all that unusual, when you look at the past. Hanks wasn't wrong. I love how the author weaves historical events, (some unrelated) into the political ones in a way that transports the reader directly to the era. I would like to see this book made into a Ken Burns documentary series. I'm wondering how the author was able to uncover all the details???? Love it!
