About the Author
Michael A. Burayidi is Irving Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Urban Planning at Ball State University, Indiana. He is also author of Downtowns: Revitalizing the Centers of Small Urban Communities (Routledge, 2001) and Urban Planning in a Multicultural Society (Praeger, 2000).

A good introductory textbook on learning theory

This was my textbook for a graduate course on Adult Learning. Well written introduction to the processes of learning, and learning theory citing Piaget, Maslow, Freud, and Kolb, with an explanation of how they contribute to Illeris's own model of learning. Chapter 2 offers a helpful biology primer on how the brain organizes and stores information for recall, written at a level for the non-science student to be able to follow along but sufficient for someone with a basic sciences background to review. Chapter 3 introduces Illeris's three dimensions of learning model, chapter 4 then reviews the learning processes of assimilation, accommodation, and transformation, linking them to his model. Chapter 6 deals with incentives and motivation, briefly reviewing Freud's drives, and Maslow's hierarchy of needs, among other theorists. Chapter 9 looks at barriers and resistance to learning, Chapter 10 looks at learning styles. Illeris writes in an engaging manner.

Comprehensive review of literature and education theories

This is a comprehensive review of ideas on education and learning, though the writing style requires persistence and probably a steady supply of stimulants to be on hand. I found that it opens up access to many European contributions that are not often noticed in other works written in English. For this reason alone, it is a valuable addition for a researcher's personal library.
