About the Author

J.R. Ubejd Mujagic, Ph.D., P.E., S.E. is a senior associate at Uzun & Case Engineers, LLC in Atlanta, GA. He has a diverse experience in the design of metal building systems and low- and high-rise conventional buildings of most types and in all major building materials. Dr. Mujagic holds a Ph.D. in structural engineering from Virginia Tech. His research interests include structural reliability, composite structures and cold-formed steel. He is a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Committee on Specifications and its subcommittees on connections, diaphragms and seismic design. He is also a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Task Committees on Composite Members and Loads and Analysis. He is a licensed Structural Engineer in California, Illinois and Washington and a registered Professional Engineer in several states.

Dianetics 55

In my life time of 40 plus, I have spent 19 of it in schooling. I have attended 3 major universities and have read a lot about many subjects, but I have to confess that my enlightenment came toward the end of my formal education when I discovered the works of L. Ron Hubbard. I learned about a lot of things when I was in and out of college, but mostly in general sense that had very little aplicability. Hubbard's very straight forward and common sense approach raises one's eye brows with a new level of understanding of truth. I picked up this book 3 summers ago and went to the beach for a weekend. I received a sever sun burn from the 2 days I spent reading this book under the sun. I could not put it down once I began reading it. If you ever had trouble communicating to either make yourself understood or understanding someone else, you should read this book. If you want to know when and how we begin reading into a situation and with all it's potential how we actively make it work against us instead of for us, read this book. Learn about the fundamentals of the most essential part of our daily living which is to communicate properly. But remember, I did not say you had to be incredibly intelligent, but you have to care and be willing to learn what works. You will agree with what you read

Very enlightening and useful knowledge for everybody

In short I can only say that after reading this book I have understood things and changed conditions in my life in areas that I never dreamed was possible. It has to do with very basic principles in life and existence - I am sure it will touch some basic issues in everybody - if they dare to look at themselves and their surroundings.

A Powerful Tool

I decided I ought to write a review to let people know a) this is a great book, and b) they really ought to read Fundamentals of Thought first. But I see that another reviewer has already pointed that out.

What I WOULD like to stress is that this is a book that puts a very powerful tool in the hands of anyone who is honest enough to use it without having some other axe to grind. The communication principles outlined by Mr. Hubbard can be used (easily!) to analyze and improve every area your life, and to remedy many common problems.

Are there areas in which you are waiting anxiously for someone else to communicate something or to do something you want? Are you hoping for some sort of acknowledgement that you're not likely to get? Do you have unanswered letters around, or things you've wanted to do or agreed to do but haven't yet found time for? Is there someone around who keeps talking to you or directing some other communication your way, and it's driving you nuts? Are there people around you who just don't seem to listen?

If the answer to any of these questions is "yes" (and this is not by any means a complete list--I just took these off the top of my head), or if you're having any OTHER kind of problem in life, YOU NEED TO READ AND APPLY THIS BOOK.

Get Ready To Toe The Line...

If you do a quick google search of Grete Waitz you will find a ton of information on such an accomplished runner. For this alone her book is worth considering. Her wealth of knowledge is put to good use as she walks the runner through the experience from the ground up, moving from beginning training to after finishing, giving anecdotes and examples along the way.

I've ran in 6 marathon or longer races thus far and am still learning some of what she writes in this book. Reader beware, though, this book is for exactly what the title states, for runners looking to run their first marathon. A lot of the information given is very basic to runners who have ran this distance already, but to someone who never has ran 26.2 she touches on every aspect and allows the runner to become well informed in what they are getting into.

She briefly touches on two training schedules within the book. The first is for those readers who have ran very little at all. It sets them up and begins conditioning them to running, which in turn prepares them for the actual marathon training. So if you do run some then the training schedule number two is where you would begin. But it is very basic, kind of a run these miles on these days on this week. And she makes it clear that this book is not meant as a day by day guide to your training.

Instead she focuses on the stuff that is overlooked when researching and preparing for a marathon. She goes over running basics, such as form and speed and so on, as well as signs to prevent injury, motivation, and running gear among other information. But the most important chapter is Chapter 12: Marathon Nutrition and Hydration. Even if you have ran a marathon before this is a good chapter to read and refresh and/or educate yourself again. There is a good amount of base information that will probably go the farthest for any marathon hopeful in aiding them to the finish line. Additionally, the final chapter, The Race, is also very useful for the beginning runner because it goes over some of what you will feel, see and expect when you toe the line.

I wish I would have found Mrs. Waitz's book before I ran my fateful, yet ill prepared first marathon at San Francisco.

If you are a first time marathoner I would give this book a good read and set your goals on that marathon.

You can do better.

By hearing the credentials of Grete Waitz, I was expectant to learn much from this book about my first marathon training. What I got however, was the desire to break out a red pen and an overwhelming need to get a better book. The entire work is filled with obvious grammatical errors (even on the back cover, "udated" rather than "updated" is featured in bright yellow lettering. If only I had paid attention to that!) English errors aside, this isn't a very helpful book as a guide. Most of the information in it is little more than common sense, and if it isn't, could have easily been gleaned from the internet. Grete has but one 16 week training program, and a bonus one previous to that to make sure you are fit to run. The descriptions of the programs are lacking at best, and offer scant insight on the timing of strength training or stretching. For a better knowledge base and a book you'll go back to when you have questions, try The Marathon Method: The 16-Week Training Program that Prepares You to Finish a Full or Half Marathon in Your Best Time By Tim Holland- it features far more detailed and varied training plans, so you'll be more likely to find one that suits you. With all respect to Waitz and her amazing accomplishments, her book fell far short of the training bible she claims it to be.

Interesting, well-written and informative book. It is truly a book for first-timers, however, and most of the information -although relevant to running- is general, for the large public. She does cover most if not all topics that you might want to read about. It is a good inspiration especially if you doubt you can run a marathon.

A good introductory textbook on learning theory

This was my textbook for a graduate course on Adult Learning. Well written introduction to the processes of learning, and learning theory citing Piaget, Maslow, Freud, and Kolb, with an explanation of how they contribute to Illeris's own model of learning. Chapter 2 offers a helpful biology primer on how the brain organizes and stores information for recall, written at a level for the non-science student to be able to follow along but sufficient for someone with a basic sciences background to review. Chapter 3 introduces Illeris's three dimensions of learning model, chapter 4 then reviews the learning processes of assimilation, accommodation, and transformation, linking them to his model. This is a comprehensive review of ideas on education and learning, though the writing style requires persistence and probably a steady supply of stimulants to be on hand. I found that it opens up access to many European contributions that are not often noticed in other works written in English. For this reason alone, it is a valuable addition for a researcher's personal library.

I highly recommend this book for high school, college and university students. It provides clear, step-by-step instructions on how to research and write research papers. Before I found this book I struggled with writing research papers and received B's for my effort, after I bought this book and followed the easy to read instructions, I achieved A+ on all my research papers and ultimately my classes. I recommend this books especially for high school students because learning the right way to write research papers and the whole process of research writing takes time to master and should be learned while in high school so that when you enter college or university you know how to write the many papers you will be asked to write. Each page of this book is packed with good advice and need to know information that, if you read carefully and follow exactly, will help you achieve the grades you want. More than that, there are tons of tips and tricks that make the process of writing research papers more interesting, easy and enjoyable. I have used this book and the A+ grades I received on my papers are a testament to the great instructions and advice that guide you every step of the way in this remarkable book.
