recommended as THE standard on memory techniques

The book covers both the most effective and efficient memory techniques for today.
And they are explained in an easily understandable way: the method of loci (a technique that dates before Christ), acronyms (one of my favourite tools), memorizing any sequence of numbers (with an astonishing system), remembering names&faces, safely recalling dates, facts, jokes, and much more.

I got to know the German version of this book in 2003. It was by studying this book that I learned the most profound memory tools. I had never heard of memory techniques before. This training-by-reading brought me up from literally nothing to TOP 18 in the world rankings of memory sports (2004) within one year.

It is with great satisfaction that I see students, teachers, children and friends enhancing their memory capabilities just because they get in touch with simple memory tools as they are featured in "Brighter".
As a teacher I testifiy the enormous benefit of the described learning and memory techniques in schools and universities: Learning just becomes easier, definitely more joyful, and, as you keep on using these techniques, significantly faster.

THE BOOK THAT WILL ASTOUND YOU

The book "Brighter" by Dr. Gunther Karsten is one of the best, if not the best (in my humble opinion) on the subject of brain research and learning techniques. These are demonstrated by real examples and applications in an impressive way. The multi-facetted methods are such that individual problems can easily be solved by applying them.
This book demonstrates, on the one hand, the importance and necessity of this subject and on the other hand functions as a universal reference work for the various techniques. Another important point is that Dr. Karsten does not shrink from formulating his knowledge in a way which is accessible for everyone. He also understands how not to exaggerate and does not make empty promises. He makes it clear, in contrast to some other authors, that these methods can show immediate results - but only through a concentrated effort on the part of the reader.
All in all, "Brighter" is a valuable acquisition. It opens doors to where one has not been before and helps learners in an optimal fashion to improve their capacity for absorbing information.

This book is something special!

This book is something special! It is not just for reading - but for working with it. This takes definitely some time. But at the end I myself could say that learning had never been so much fun before. The book contains very interesting techniques, is entertaining and gives everybody the chance to learn more about her/his own brain. The numerous tests and exercises are not too complicated and the learning methods are described clearly and simply, thus, I think, it is of use not only for adults or students but also for older school kids.
In my opinion this book can help everybody to manage the numerous learning tasks we encounter in life much better. And, moreover, it does not seem to matter whether we want to make our life easier as a pensioner, improve in our business work or learn faster and more effective as a student - somehow it is written for human beings in general. And that I find brilliant. A really marvelous book!

Nathalia Holt trained at Massachusetts General Hospital, MIT, Harvard University, the University of Southern California, and Tulane University. She lives with her family in Boston.

Very interesting, highly unusual!

Cured is a remarkable book about quite incredible science....and a pretty good story to boot. Natalia Holt has done some very good research here. One of the things, perhaps the most interesting, that she's found is that the best work, the most creative, most daring, most cutting edge work on HIV (and a host of other diseases, too) is not being done by the big corporations, the big pharma companies.
Just the opposite is at work, the innovative research is being done mostly by small biotech companies, such as Sangamo Biotech, in Richmond, California. They are using something called ZFNs, zinc finger nuclease. As I understand it there were some small villages in Europe where over many years, whenever the Black Plague or similar terrible things struck, killing off millions of people, the people from these small towns were spared, they didn't get sick.
Something in their makeup was protecting them, and over the years scientists studied these people in these villages, looking for what it was that made them different, that protected them. One of the things they found was a small finger-shaped growth on blood cells, one that was high in zinc, and thus the name ZFNs, zinc finger nuclease's. Sangamo has been working on refining this ZFN technique for a couple of decades now, and suddenly they're starting to make it work! Quite exciting stuff really, that could indeed change modern medicine.
Cured should be read more....it's a fine book, clearly written; difficult science explained in a clean, clear easy to understand way. An important book, highly recommended!

Great Book for science students or anyone who is interested

This is actually my first amazon review, this book is so good that I decided to write my first (I am only 1/3 into the book). As a science student, I am able to understand most of what Dr. Holt is talking about. She presented the history and anecdotes in a casual story-telling manner. For layman who has no background knowledge in biology, she added illustrations and tried to use analogy to explain the biological mechanism.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to understand the history and science of HIV/AIDS.

Kudos for Dr. Holt

This book is so well written that I felt compelled to read it in 48 hours.
The book is clear and concise, and perfectly understandable to the layman.
I have been reading on this topic daily and this is the first I heard of the "berlin patient", cured by early intervention.
Nathalia brings each patient to life and shows how hard this disease makes their lives.
Hats off to all the scientists and doctors mentioned.

About the Author
Manfred Schmidt is Professor in Political Science at the University of Heidelberg. He was previously Professor in Political Science at the Centre for Social Policy Research in Bremen. He has written widely on comparative public policy and politics in Germany and was the winner of the Leibniz-Preis of the German Research Foundation in 1995.
