The Best Book About Devil's Island And The Penal Colony In French Guiana!

This is the best book about the penal colony in French Guiana in my opinion (another good one is, "Au Bagne", by Albert Londres, but that one has'nt been translated into English).
It's one of those books you can't put down before you've finished it. If you enjoyed, "Papillon", by Henri Charriere, then this book is for you.
This is the harrowing TRUE story of René Belbenoit's 15 years in the French penal colony. He describes the cruel conditions the convicts lived under in a very matter-of-fact way and mentions some of the incredible statistics, such as how half the convicts died within their first year in Guiana from malnutrition, diseases like malaria, leprosy etc.etc. He also describes his escape attempts and how he was punished with solitary confinement in a cell on Saint Joseph Island. We hear the stories of some of the famous convicts, and the perversity of the guards who enjoys to add to the convicts sufferings be dealing out unjust punishments. In fact, the guards are in many cases worse crooks than the convicts and they steal and swindle with the supplies which were meant for the convicts. We hear about hospitals without medicine, where the only treatment is a can of condensed milk.
Belbenoit finally succeeds in escaping after four unsuccessful attempts and ends up in the U.S.A. where he becomes a citizen.
He later writes a follow-up book called, "Hell On Trial", in which he expand on some aspects of the penal colony, which is also a great book.

Well worth a read

Just to add a little more to Bookworm's excellent review, with the passage of time this book is likely to be difficult to obtain but it is worth hunting for.
Charriere has been criticized for writing in the first person (perhaps not his fault but rather than that of his agent/translator) but Belbenoit's story is all his own. As a bit of trivia they were both on the same shipment from France (Belbenoit being returned) but I don't know if they knew each other.

Another book covering this fascinating era is The Convict by Felix Milani.

Dry Guillotine was issued as "I escaped from Devil's Island" and made into a film of the same name by the Corman Brothers. It was brought out quickly to capitalize on the publicity for Papillion. The movie usually gets a grade Z in reviews but really it is not that bad!

Senior Citizen Looks Back

I am 73 years old. Sixty years ago I got a hold of this book and read it. I was born in 1936. It must have been shortly after its publication. I came from a conservative Christian background. I have been an atheist now for decades. I'm am not sure why my parents let me read this book. I am glad they did. I remember to this day that the book was riveting. I was always a non-conformist, even at 12-13, and so when my teacher assigned a book review I turned in my report on "I Escaped from Devil's Island." My teacher was so shocked that she contacted my parents. I don't know to this day what transpired at that meeting. I do know that my parents never censored my reading. I went on to a career in science and to earn four college degrees. In my retirement I am the author of six novels plus other books. Read on, my friends. Don't let anyone get in your way.

About the Author

Bonnie Kaul Nastasi, Ph.D. (Kent State University, 1986, School Psychology & Early Childhood Education) is a Professor in the Department of Psychology, School of Science and Engineering, at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Dr. Nastasi co-directs a trauma specialization in the School Psychology PhD Program at Tulane. Dr. Nastasi’s research focuses on the use of mixed methods designs to develop and evaluate culturally appropriate assessment and intervention approaches for promoting mental health and reducing health risks such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV, both within the US and internationally. She has worked in Sri Lanka since 1995 on development of school-based programs to promote psychological well-being and directed a multi-country study of psychological well-being of children and adolescents with research partners in 12 countries from 2008-2013. She was one of the principal investigators of an interdisciplinary public health research program to prevent STIs among married men and women living in the slums of Mumbai, India from 2002-2013. Most recently she has been engaged in development of culturally and contextually relevant school-based mental health services in New Orleans as part of the redevelopment of public education following the 2005 Hurricane Katrina, working with community stakeholders and a team of Tulane University students. She is active in promotion of child rights and social justice within the profession of school psychology and has directed the development of a curriculum for training school psychologists internationally on child rights, a joint effort of International School Psychology Association, International Institute of Child Rights and Development, Division 16 of the American Psychological Association (APA), and Tulane University’s School Psychology Program. Dr. Nastasi is a past-president of APA’s Division 16 and past Co-Chair of APA’s Committee on International Relations in Psychology.

John H. Hitchcock, Ph.D. (University at Albany, State University of New York, 2003, Educational Psychology) is an associate professor of Instructional Systems Technology within Indiana University’s School of Education, Bloomington, Indiana, USA. He is also the Director of the Center for Evaluation & Education Policy. Dr. Hitchcock’s research focus is on the use of mixed methods and other types of designs to evaluate interventions and policies that focus on helping students with specialized learning needs. He has served as a principal investigator, methodological lead and content expert for the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) at the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) at the U.S. Department of Education, to complete a systematic review of interventions designed for children with emotional-behavioral disorders. He also served on a panel that drafted standards for assessing the causal-validity of Single-Case Design studies for the WWC. Dr. Hitchcock has served as a co-principal investigator of two large scale randomized controlled trials to assess the impact of reading and math curricula. He has contributed to efforts to develop programs that promote psychological well-being in Sri Lanka since 1998, and he is currently an Associate Editor for School Psychology Review.

The first chapter explores the ways in which girls' films construct, reinforce, challenge and dismantle mainstream conceptualizations of sexuality, race and power. narratives, including recycled plots and stars, treatments of parental and male authority, and adult conceptualizations of adolescence. The third chapter describes girls' experiences within these narratives through such conventions as attitude, teen fashion, music and dance, unsanctioned rites of passage, and race. The fourth chapter covers the negotiation of sex and sexuality, virginity and sexual empowerment.

Girls Roles in the Movies

This book takes an in depth look at how the female protagonist is portrayed by movies in our time. It is well written with comprehensive examples and analysis that exposes the limited thinking of today's culture in regard to girls' roles in movies. This book makes you think from a different angle when watching the block buster movies whether they're action, drama, or comedies. Several times while reading sections about movies I've seen I was surprised by the author's insights. I recommend it especially for young fathers with a daughter. It will have them thinking in a new light about what we all take for granted at the movies and the culture we live in.

This text takes a critical look at how mainstream movies influence our perception of what girlhood is - from sexuality to race - and challenges us to reexamine whether these portrayals are accurate. The author also examines independent movies to illustrate how girlhood is more complex and varied than the image in many mainstream movies, as well as how these smaller films challenge the ideal image depicted in the movies and reinforced in American society.

This is an excellent text for those interested in Women Studies or American Studies, as well as those who are interested in the intersection of gender, race and power.

A lifetime resource as well as a great introduction

I'm surprised I've studied Anthropology this long without this book. It is simple, linear and effective. David Fetterman takes the beginner through all the necessary thought processes and equipment required to do research. More importantly, he includes a whole section of resource material in one book. Everything from Web sites with research data to List Serves that have anthropological material to associations, their phone numbers, email addresses and Web sites. He includes a detailed listing of software and freeware that can help a reseacher, complete with a brief explanation of the use and value.
Moreover, he noted that when the first edition came out in 1989, there was no World Wide Web, so that by the time this book was published in 1998, it was undoubtedly already out of date. Subsequently, he has set up a Web page to accompany the text with a more up-to-date listing of software, freeware, List Serves, technological advances and WebSites.
This book is a great tool!
Fetterman gives user friendly definitions of many of the most daunting terms in the field of anthropology.
Emic = insider's or native's perspective. Etic = external or social science perspective. Proxemitics = study of how the socially defined physical distance between people varies in differing social circumstances. Kinesics = body language study. Operationalism = defining one's terms and methods of measurement. Terms like micro and macro level studies, open and closed probes, structural and attribute questions are not only defined, but are put into practice with short examples.
Fetterman briefly describes research methods such as projection techniques and triangulation -- gives examples of their use, advantages and drawbacks.
He details specific uses for specific programs, like MicNotePad that turns the researchers portable computer into a tape recorder and aids in transcribing the material.
This book is an essential tool for any student, undergrad, graduate or post graduate in anthropology or social sciences in general.

A "How To" Guide

Fetterman explains in sequential fashion how to do an ethnographic study. He describes ethnography as "the art and science of describing a group or culture" (p. 11) The first step in the process is for the researcher to enter the field of study with an open mind. In attempting to describe a setting, there is no one acceptable standard. Multiple interpretations of reality exist. A study is one person's view of a given group, at a particular time. Although this limitation is a given, an ethnographer should seek to be holistic in presenting a study's findings (p. 21). An ethnographic study would include both structure and function. Structure is the social structure or configuration of the group. Function is the social relations among group members. Like systems theory, relationships are significant components of an ethnographic study. Symobolic communication is significant in revealing what is important to the people being studied. As an observer, a researcher using this approach is a human instrument. There are some biases, but the more experience one develops, the better one can develop his or her skills of observation. Fetterman goes on to talk about the difference between writing good field notes and writing the final report. In all the book clearly shows how to go about the process of doing an ethnographic study.

Poorly designed book and outdated material for a big price.

Tiny book. Big price. The fact that you are paying $40 for a book that explains what a PDA is and talks about how to use the internet is just wrong. Yes, there are good chunks of information in the book about what ethnography is and how to approach it, but for the price this is not enough. Maybe 10 years ago this would have been work $40. Not anymore. Also, the book itself uses cheap paper stock, renders grainy black and white images, and holds little value with its cheap binding. At $12 – $15 I may have given this book four stars.

Serves its purpose beautifully

I have loved all their atlas's. The book had all the basic info you look up all the time and its in one spot without searching the web and I love the detailed city maps. People seem to complain that its not something it was never intended to be. Sure you can get a lot of the into all over the web. I prefer to pull out my atlas's to quickly and concisely find what I need. The travel routes alone were worth it to me! Large hardbound color book fro $13? Its awesome!

Worth every penny
By Doing what I can
I love the atlas, its a great tool. When it came it was very well made. If you are thinking about purchasing this do it, its a great product. Everyone else is just upset it took so long to ship.

With digging you would be able to find the information on the internet but this is made for you, and its on nice paper, and nicely bound. The book even smelled fresh when it came. I mean I opened it and it woof.. freshly processed paper. My teenage brother loves it too, maybe I'll get him one.

She is the author of three previous books, including The Magic Bookshelf, a parents' favorite and library staple that was also featured in Parenting's Babytalk magazine and as a series in The Los Angeles Times Book Review as part of Reading by 9, a children's literacy initiative. A must read for all women in an abusive relationship and/or married to a narcissist

If you are a woman in an abusive relationship and/or married to a narcissist, you must read this book!

Here's the latest twist - Abusive husbands now claiming their wives are the abusers and they are the victims!!

This ploy is just as ugly as it sounds. Some men are upending domestic violence laws so that their wives (who are the true victims) are arrested, prosecuted and even sentenced as abusers.

In the foreword to the new book, Hanging On By My Fingernails: Surviving the New Divorce Gamesmanship, and How a Scratch Can Land You in Jail, written by Janie McQueen, Tamara N. Holder, a Chicago criminal defense attorney, explains how the scam works:

"Unfortunately, many abusive men have learned to reshape domestic violence laws into another weapon of abuse. They are turning police and court protections upside down: The abusers themselves call 9-1-1; they have the women arrested for domestic violence; and then they do everything they can to try to have the women prosecuted and sentenced. In this way, the true victim is painted as the abuser.

There is a deeper motivation in using this ploy; to show a pattern of "violent conduct" on the woman's part so that the abuser can use it as evidence against her in a divorce or child custody battle. And this form of abuse is permanent. A bruise heals after a few days, but a conviction for a violent crime mars her record forever.

The set-up: A couple has a fight. Either the wife calls 9-1-1 in a desperate plea for police intervention, or the husband makes the call first in a preemptive attack. When the police arrive, the woman is visibly upset. The man, on the other hand, is extremely calm as he switches off his anger. The husband tells the police that his wife is delusional, crazy, and violent. Depending on how convincing the man's story is to the police officer, and the state's law on domestic violence, either both people are arrested or the woman is arrested.

In the case of a dual arrest, which some states discourage, the woman often tells prosecutors she doesn't want to testify against her husband, so the case is dismissed. Meanwhile, the husband is determined that she be prosecuted. Instead of the prosecutors looking into the history of the relationship before proceeding with the criminal case, they move full speed ahead. The wife is usually cut off from her husband's financial support so she cannot pay for defense against him. As a result, she is forced to take a plea to the charges because she cannot afford to defend herself. She fears taking the case to trial, losing, and going to jail."

Sadly, an arrest ploy as Ms. Holder describes above can have devastating consequences for the woman involved, including criminal trials, lingering criminal records, distorted custody battles and financial losses.

"Victims of these increasingly common set-ups face criminal charges alongside their emotionally depleting divorce and custody cases, which are, of course, by now stacked against them," Janie McQueen, the author of Hanging On By My Fingernails: Surviving the New Divorce Gamesmanship, and How a Scratch Can Land You in Jail, told me when I interviewed her for an article I was writing for my Forbes blog. "Even if the victim is able to gather the resources to hire a criminal defense attorney and get the charges dropped, she remains tied up with clearing her name and repairing all the damage while her spouse goes about setting up the rest of the divorce."

Ms. McQueen, a former crime reporter, was once a victim of these ploys herself.

"There is far more to this ploy than someone going from minding her household to sitting in jail," she explained. "The emotional trauma can't be overstated. What is happening is, the abuser is using the system to perpetuate the abuse. She thinks: who, then, is on her side?"

Unfortunately, these scams undermine sound public policy and create confusion that, paradoxically, ends up protecting abusers.

"Domestic violence issues have become so heated and politicized that it's difficult to make people even listen to what is really going on, to realize there is a difference between a true DV situation and this scam that manipulates the stiff arrest laws," Ms. McQueen concluded. "This is a situation that carries a `guilty until proven innocent' stigma. Even strong proponents of the Violence Against Women Act seem not to understand this backlash effect of the perpetrator playing the victim, or they perceive exposure of these very real set-ups as criticism that would weaken their lobbying efforts. I think swift arrest laws through VAWA are needed--but we need to figure out how to tweak the system to identify the true perpetrator."

Divorcing? You need to read this. Now.

There are times when I find myself wishing I could somehow get a book into the hands of every woman out there.

I have a special section of my library which holds a few well-worn texts on Domestic Violence, the Family Court system, and related issues. There were only five "go-to" books there, until a moment ago - when I placed Janie McQueen's HANGING ON BY MY FINGERNAILS on the top of the stack.

Not to be pejorative toward other works on the referenced topic, but this isn't the usual offering on DV and the courts. This is the story of Ms. McQueen's own hellish struggle with the latest tentacle of the misogynistic chokehold that the "Father's Rights" movement has established within the FC system: Divorce Gamesmanship.

To sum it up: The male who wants to dump his wife/mother of the children somewhere while he sets himself up for the preferred stance in a divorce action is instructed to get her arrested. How? Bait, attack, assault - and if she defends herself, call 911. The System will take it from there.

The enduring power of this book is found in the fact that Janie McQueen doesn't merely explore, examine, and explain Divorce Games; no, she recounts it. She lays bare her own ordeal of being maneuvered onto the Gamesmanship hook, with her children used as the bait; then, she adroitly takes apart The Games, and the systems which support them. In her work to get the warning out to other women, Ms. McQueen relives a thousand betrayals, from the treachery and deceit of her well-coached ex to the church people whom she once considered friends. Perhaps the most devastating element of "Hanging On" - of this sick culture as a whole, really - is the enthusiastic, even eager defection of useful idiots to the side of the oppressors.

Then, she takes this essential guide to the next level: She shares the best advice, from the most knowledgeable experts, on what to do if you're caught in the Divorce Gamesmanship net.

Ms. McQueen is an author and a journalist, so of course, she reads like a dream. And the truth of her story hits the reader like a nightmare. It's heartbreaking at times (she brought tears to my eyes as she recalled childhood summers at her grandparents' home), infuriating at others; however, it's reality, and women who are thinking about divorce - or who suspect one is coming their way in the future - need to read this. Now. Before they take the bait.

In addition to providing a wealth of legal advice, Janie expertly weaves her personal story of divorce, as well as those of other women and men who have fallen victim to divorce gamesmanship, into a tale that is at times both riveting and poignantly humorous. Having just gone through a divorce myself, I was fortunate not to fall victim to the kinds of underhanded maneuvers that fill the pages of this book. Yet, in the high stakes world we live in, I would not hesitate to recommend this book to any friend contemplating separation or divorce. Janie's knowledge of the legal pitfalls that can ensnare the unsuspecting can serve as a cautionary tale to anyone navigating the complexities of divorce today.
