Guide to impasto oil painting

Today a little dated, in that the products/colors that Millard discusses are no longer made, supplanted by newer chemically stable substances. Filled with dense text and many, many color illustrations, the book is full of good ideas, if you can cope with some loss of color in the printing inks. A virtual textbook in the artistic use of knife-work, it opens up a world of possibilities for enhancing the texture of painting. I'm an acrylic painter, so I was mentally substituting various mediums for the author's advice on partially drying paint on brown paper to draw the oil out for a drier texture. A lot to read, here, but aimed at the oil painter.

Surface affects are paramount here

Millard's well-meaning and enthusiastic approach is fun and interesting to a point, but his emphasis is only on surface affects and paint manipulation. In fairness, that's what the book title proclaims as the subject. My average 3-star review is more about my own disappointment than his failure as an author or painter. He's a good painter and really expresses his love of painting and sharing it. However, I soon became frustrated with his demonstrations, because I wanted to know and see how impasto painting related to the subject matter at hand. For example, if he paints a house and trees with one or two people in the yard or doorway, he is completely focused on how thick the paint is for the sky, or the side of the building, or how few daubs are needed to show the person. But never does the building, or tree, or human being matter, they are just excuses to use paint.
The illustrations are very good and there are a lot of them, and the paint is indeed luscious-looking. Reading this book is like having a very tasty meal but the food somehow doesn't sustain the body.

Yoshiki Tanaka was born in 1952 in Kumamoto Prefecture and completed a doctorate in literature at Gakushuin University. Tanaka won the Gen’eijo (a mystery magazine) New Writer Award with his debut story “Midori no Sogen ni…” (On the Green Field…) in 1978 and then started his career as a science fiction and fantasy writer. Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Dawn, which translates the European wars of the nineteenth century to an interstellar setting, won the Seiun Award for best science fiction novel in 1987. Tanaka’s other works include the fantasy series The Heroic Legend of Arslan and many other science fiction, fantasy, historical, and mystery novels and stories.

Harriet Jacobs, a slave who is seeking freedom from her mistress's father, Dr. Norcum, after being harassed verbally and physically, runs away to claim her freedom. She escapes to the attic of her grandmother's house for seven long years of her life. In the attic she has to be quiet, and is unable to move around. In the winter she freezes, and in the summer she is blistering hot. She has nothing else to do all day, except write in her journal, where she expresses her feelings since she has no one to confide in. Later she escapes to the North, where she plays an active role in helping slaves escape to the "free states." She also writes an autobiography of her life as a slave and the dreadful life she lives. She wanted to make a difference in the world, and didn't want anyone to go through the pain and suffering that she went through. This novel portrays the fact that when people go through a miserable experience in life, they try to prevent the same thing from happening to others. In this book, Harriet is petrified of Dr. Norcum, and after enduring all the pain and suffering brought on by slavery, she decides to run away to escape from all her pain, and Dr. Norcum's controlling ways. When she escapes to the "free states" she joins an abolition movement to prevent slavery. Harriet is so full of passion and perseverance, so full of fire, it gives this book its zing. Harriet is a heroine striving against a backdrop of actual events, and real characters. She reveals underlying truths in the sad histories of many slaves. This book reveals the inhumanity suffered by our ancestors. Displayed by the fictitious letter this story is written so you can successfully experience the sentimental value, which the slaves portrayed. Your emotions will run wild from anger and excitement to sadness and fear. One minute you will be sitting on your bed reading, and the next, you will be running through the woods with Harriet trying to escape to the "free states." Letters from a Slave Girl: the Story of Harriet Jacob's is a fantastic achievement. It successfully expresses the emotions that people felt in the slave era. The story of Harriet Jacobs

Many people today have no idea about what it feels like to be a slave or to live in hiding or to fight for freedoms we barely recognize today. However, reading this historical fiction by Mary E. Lyons will give you a small amount of insight into the pain, courage, and triumphs of an ordinary slave but extraordinary person.
Harriet Ann Jacobs was by some measure a normal slave in the small town of Edenton, North Carolina in 1825. Harriet was special though, because her first master taught her how to read and write. Therefore, the story is written from Harriet's point of view in the form of letters she wrote to her family and friends but kept to herself. I think this is neat because the book contains the black dialect and even spelling mistakes made by Harriet.
Harriet sadly lost her mother and father at a young age. Many of her first letters were written to them. Sadly, Harriet was sold to a mean master, Dr. Norcom, who would later sexually harass her. To cope with this pain, Harriet had sexual relations with another white man, Samuel Sawyer, and had two children, Joseph and Louisa. Harriet felt so threatened by Dr. Norcom she went into hiding under the roof of her Grandmother's house for seven long years. This was very difficult for Harriet, not being able to see her family and staying in a space so small she couldn't stand up. Harriet eventually made it to the free North escaping on a ship to Philadelphia. Harriet was joyfully reunited with her brother and children for a winter in Boston. Her dream of living free with her family finally came true. The rest of her years, Harriet was an activist for anti-slavery. She wrote the story of her life; Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl explaining the usually overlooked aspect of sexually abused slaves.
I enjoyed this book because it offered a different point of view into the world of slavery. This book made me feel as if I was really living the events that Harriet experienced. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an unusual point of view on the hardships of slavery.

The story, Letters from a Slave Girl: The story of Harriet Jacobs by Mary E. Lyons, tells about the life of a slave girl named Harriet Jacobs who was able to survive slavery. This book is dramatic at times and still very suspenseful. It tells about Harriet's hardships, her first love, and about the type of men she trusts and turns to in time of need. Harriet's family is very important to her, as it is obvious in this book. Harriet turns to her family more than anyone else in this book. They are the only ones she knows she can come to at any time.
Harriet was harassed by one of her owners when she was about 14 years of age. He wouldn't actually touch her or threaten to touch her till she was older. Harriet met her first love R at a dance. They were in love at first sight and wanted to be together all the time. When R was finally free he asked Harriet to marry him. When Harriet asked Dr. Norcom for his permission he said if she wanted to be married she would have to marry one of his slaves. Just to make Harriet miserable he said if he ever found out whom she wanted to marry, he would have him shot down in the very spot he stood. Harriet, afraid for R's life, told him to go away and have a good life. Harriet then met a man who said that he would offer her any attention she needed. His name was Samuel Sawyer. Harriet went to him and had sex with him. She was using him as a sort of protection. Also she thought he might be able to help her find freedom. Turns out that Samuel Sawyer and Dr Norcom aren't good friends because of something happening a long time ago. When Harriet found out that she was pregnant she told Dr Norcom that she was pregnant she finally won a battle, but the war was not won yet.
I think this is an ok book, but I wouldn't suggest it to people who are looking to an interesting book. But this is an ok book to read in school.

A second emphasis is on comparative studies of handedness in primates. There is now enough data in the literature across different species to present an evolutionary tree for the emergence of handedness (and perhaps other aspects of hemispheric specialization, such as neuro-anatomical asymmetries) and its relation to specific morphological and ecological adaptations in various primate species.

It's a Training Workbook

I purchased this book based on a review by someone who said he had been working with DISC for over 20 years was happy to finally have a book that deciphers what DISC really means. Now that's over-stating the case at least a hundred-fold. This is exactly what it says it is: a training workbook for trainers to use in facilitating groups of employees. It is not very educational as a stand alone book. As an educational tool, there is less here than you can find for free on the Internet. If you are a facilitator looking for a decent and low-cost training workbook for groups of employees, you may want to consider this book. Tom Ritchey's I'm Stuck, You're Stuck, is much more educational.

Very Simple To Do

Fischer's book, describing the anti-cancer method of Johanna Budwig, is excellent. But the essence of it in application can be stated very simply: Eat low-fat cottage cheese combined with flaxseed oil (sometimes known as linseed oil). It's best to obtain the oil in the REFRIGERATED section of a natural-foods store. The refrigerated form resists rancidity, which naturally happens quickly with flaxseed oil at room temperature, even in a sealed bottle..
My comments are of course not a substitute for reading the book, but I have given you the essence of what to do. The rest are explanatory details that provide enough of a background that you can understand the reasons for the recommendation.

Wow!! Bad lipid profile? --this book is for you!

With the common American diet, transfats in our food, you too will develop problems. Do you have high triglycerides, or bad HDL/LDL ratios? Is your LDL (bad) cholesterol creeping higher and higher over the years -to the point at which your doctor is urging cholesterol lower drugs (poison)? It is very possible it is not what you are eating. It is what you are NOT eating.
Sure, you may want to start reading food labels and limit (stop) eating hydrogenated fats, but the information contained in this book -A diet exchanging Omega3 fats (as in unprocessed/ unrefined flaxseed oil) for other fat types, and adding sulfur based proteins to your diet, combined with the other surprising facts and studies -you will probably reduce your chances of developing cancer and heart disease.
If you have developed cancer, the text strongly urges you to not ignore your oncologist's advice, but it gives you additional weapon for your fight against cancer. These weapons, alien to classical medical teaching, usually come in the form of food (plant teas) and lipid (fats) supplements -the flaxseed oil.
This book is a must own (and studied) for everyone who has had a parent or sibling pass on from any form of cancer. And, even though this book is not a "diet" book, it will give the reader a new way to view food. It will help to modify America's behavior toward food. When the information in this book is observed and adhered to, you will loose weight. And because you will have increased your HDL lipid intake, you will not crave the snack foods containing the poisons that will leave your teenage children without your guidance.
Oh... and sorry my fellow Americans... Although this book is not trying to make you a vegetarian (meats are good, they contain high density lipids -HDL-), the book will cause you to rethink the grilling/smoking of meats, nitrite cured meats (luncheon meats, ham, hotdogs, and wursted sausages) -and our beloved barbeque.

Unbelievably informative!

This is a spectacular book, even if you never get cancer! One of the very best parts is on Dr. Johanna Budwig and her amazing therapies. Although I have been studying natural and alternative health protocols for many years now, I had not yet heard of her work. Dr. Budwig was nominated for the Nobel Prize SEVEN times because of her amazing results in her biochemistry lab. and medical practice, using Organic Cold-pressed High Lignan Flaxseed Oil and Organic Cottage Cheese (or other high quality organic proteins). She cured DECADES worth of clients with her nutritional recipes, even those who had other degenerative diseases...NOT just cancer.Unfortunately, most Western governments hush-hushed her findings and did not allow this information to be made public, because it would take business away from big pharmaceutical companies!!!

O.K., so you say, tell me about someone you know that this book has helped? Well, I've been on the once-a-day org. high lignan flaxseed oil and org. cottage cheese meal for only a few weeks, and my energy has increased by 300% and those j*rxln!=grrrwvb?+@%^z BLESSED hot flashes completely disappeared!!! To top it off the horrid sciatica and firey nerve pain all the way down to the arch of my feet is 98% gone!
