Look for another health behavior book

After taking several health behavior classes focused on theory, I would say this is the worst book I've ever read on health behavior theory. It's a very hard read to get through because it's not well written, it does not mesh with the current literature on all theories, and it over-emphasizes some very odd examples. Application is important, but by the 5th example, it's redundant. If this is for a class, rent it, do NOT buy it. Trust me, you will never use it again. If this is for your own information on behavior health theories, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. It will not be helpful for you, and I would definitely argue how it presents at least one of the theories it includes.

Easy to read

This is my first review on textbooks. There are just so many textbooks you need to buy as a grad student, but only so few one might actually enjoy while reading/making notes. This is one of those few for me. Very easy to read and follow. I like how authors always had multiple examples to demonstrate how theories and concepts can be applied in each of the chapters. Good textbook!

Much needed and my best pick!

I am working on a PhD in Nursing in which Health Promotion is an integral theory and health an integral concept. I borrowed this text from University of California Berkeley along with many other theory texts. I will likely use the book to help me write my qualifying theory paper and cite these authors for their novel approach to health behavior theory.
The mixing of individual with ecologic perspectives fits my own view while not having to settle on any one theory as the perfect fit because as DiClemente and Salazar explain there is complexity in many ways of looking at health behaviors. The authors highlight many of my favored behavioral theories yet blend the structural environmental perspectives into the mix. A truly original work that not only tells us what is out there but provides new perspectives on understanding what is already known. Bravo, and thank you authors!

It is interesting to see some of the myths debunked away facts written as a narrative rather than speculation. Jigme Lingpa (1730-1798) was one of the most important masters of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. He and the great fourteenth-century master Longchen Rabjam (1308-1363), with whom he was closely linked through visionary experience, are known as the "two omniscient masters, father and son." Jigme Lingpa was a tertön, or discoverer of treasure teachings, and revealed the Longchen Nyingtik, one of the most important cycles of meditative practice in the Nyingma School.Cortland Dahl is a Buddhist scholar and translator, a meditation teacher, and a collaborator on various scientific studies. He currently serves as Chairman of Tergar International, a global network of meditation groups and centers, and as a Senior Instructor in the Tergar community. He is also as a research scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Center for Healthy Minds. As an author and translator, Cortland has published numerous translations on meditation and Buddhist philosophy, as well as scientific articles on meditation research and the cultivation of well-being.

A Completely Different Approach

If you have time or money for only one more dharma book this year, this is the one.

Most of us have been taught (and are hopefully practicing) Atisha's seven point mind training for years but I can say with utmost confidence that this text - never before translated into English - is a lesser known road to a familiar destination that few of us have encountered in this lifetime, a path with spectacularly different views. I especially appreciated the visualizations which many may find helpful while doing other practices on the six realms. There's a lot here to get monkey mind focused and to encourage it from running about unchecked. Cortland Dahl has taken much care in rendering this translation in a clear, easily read manner and I look forward to the day when we can receive formal transmission of this text.

I haven't read this book but...

...it's so expensive, it must be really good.

This is the kindle edition and it's actually more expensive than a kindle so I expect that when I finally get to buy this, it will be so magical it will give my kindle keyboard a colored touchscreen.
