Another fine fan-collectible from Dark Horse Books

This first chronicle details the history of the world up to about 40years prior to the opening of the Dark Portal. Having collected a number of the Warcraft art books released for the game expansions, I was pleased to find that the interior art of this particular book is largely handled by a singular, excellent artist named Peter C. Lee. Instead of the vignettes or concepts, it's usually a well composed scene which he is illustrating - honestly, this is the sort of high caliber art folks who collect the Middle Earth or A Song of Ice and Fire calendars would embrace. Lovely work on his part and not something we are usually treated to seeing. @165 pages, 25 paintings, 8 maps of pre- and post-Sundering of the known world, handful of drawings, quality hardbound with no slipcover.

Excellent

This book is amazing. The quality is top notch and I am very happy with my decision to pre-order it. The cover is well designed and feels like a great quality binding. The pages are glossy and have some weight to them, it really looks like they took great care to make something of value here. There is A TON of backstory for the Warcraft lore and several highly detailed pictures are sprinkled throughout the pages to offer some visuals. If you are interested in Warcraft's back story and lore then I highly recommend purchasing this!

Some initial thoughts. (Updated.)

From the moment I received the package I knew they knocked it out of the park with this one.
The book is weighty, but not overly so. The cover is thick with a very nice glossy sheen. The graphic of Medivh is a hi-res image, and I expect it to last the life of the book. Opening the book reveals the quality binding, and the care taken during the manufacturing process. Dark Horse really outdid themselves with this one.

ONTO THE LORE!
I am a huge Warcraft lore buff, so needless to say, I was excited to dive right into this book. I have just read the first 70 pages, and thumbed through the rest. This book covers the period of time from before the founding of Azeroth up until Medivh reaches adulthood. After having read the first few chapters, I can say the quality of writing is very good. It is written as a chronicle, (surprise, surprise) and gives a good overview of what exactly happened during the formative years of Azeroth. The illustrations are very good, and provide just the right mood to really enhance the reading experience.
I won't spoil anything, but I was really surprised to see that they gave reason to the Titans and their machinations, and more importantly, what drove Sargeras to madness. The book also gives a great explanation as to exactly how each school of magic is derived, and how they interact with each other, which was a great surprise.
I will update this review when I finish the book, and give my final thoughts, but at this point I can say I am beyond impressed with this first entry, and I can't wait to dive right back in. Good Job Blizzard and Dark Horse!

Update:
After finishing the book, I can safely say I very much enjoyed it. However, I do have some caveats.
Unfortunately, I have been spoiled by the fluff books from Warhammer 40k, which I hold as the gold standard for fleshing a universe out. I can't help but to compare the two. I wish the format had been more like the Warhammer books, it would have made it more enjoyable to read, and would have added more depth to the world. It feels like the writer(s) of Chronicle were either held on a very short leash as to what kind of stories they could tell, or they didn't have the imagination to flesh out more of the world. For example, (minor spoiler) the book says that Azshara spread her dominion over most of Kalimdor, but it mostly ends there. In Warhammer fluff, it would have given dates, locations, and parties involved, followed by a detailed description of the battles that took place, and the results. It might seem like a small thing, but it's those kinds of details I wanted from a book like this.
Keeping to that point, I want to add that on more than one occasion, the book glossed over new lore where it crucially should have been expounded upon, but instead favored already established lore. In my opinion, this really detracts from what I feel the book was designed to do- establish a clear picture as to what Azeroth was like prior to the invasion, where we are first exposed to the world.
On occasion, I felt as though the writing fell flat, as if the writer was given a topic to write about, along with stringent rules to adhere to, and so their creativity was hindered. For example. The Troll wars were a big part of pre- Dark Portal history, but I felt as though we only got a few pages, where it should have gone on for quite some time. Again, I'm comparing it to the Warhammer fluff, but I really do wish that the writer(s) were given creative license to flesh out the battles and heroes in the way that a Warhammer book is written.

I don't mean to sound so negative, but I just want this trilogy to be the new gold standard for books like this. That said, I originally rated the book 5 stars. I took one star off for my aforementioned caveats.

Good book for starting out and having a basic idea ...

Good book for starting out and having a basic idea of what to expect and what roles for any magazine startup but if you're looking for a purely digital magazine or "new media" type of magazine this book is not what you are looking for. This will give you valuable information enough to create a business plan and roughly estimate what you will be earning. It also has real life examples and interesting takes on different magazine styles.

it covers the history of beloved magazines and virtually everything you need to know to start as a magazine person.
And the empales are great. Though you need more than a little patience to read it! It's long and sophisticated in some way.

From understanding the proficiency levels of the English learners in your class, to choosing standards for your lesson, to designing student-centered activities and differentiated assessments to selecting culturally relevant resources and pedagogy, Daoud supports all teachers striving to provide equity to English learners in their classes.

Examples are provided in each content chapter that describe how teachers and teacher candidates can choose Common Core State Standards and ELD/ELP Standards for their lessons. Rubrics are provided to illustrate how to differentiate assessments based on English learners’ proficiency levels so that teachers and teacher candidates are accurately assessing students’ language development and content area knowledge.

About the Author
Annette M. Daoud is a professor at California State University San Marcos where she teaches courses in multicultural and multilingual education. One course that Dr. Daoud has taught at several institutions focuses on teaching secondary teacher candidates how to teach content and English language development to their English learner students in their middle and high school content area classes. She has conducted numerous professional development trainings for content area high school teachers to effectively teach English learners in their classes. She began her career many years ago as a high school ESL teacher in Morocco with the Peace Corps, and since that time has focused her teaching and research on improving the educational experiences of secondary English learners. Dr. Daoud is currently the principal investigator for a National Professional Development grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition.

Reading this book reminds me of Konstantin giving a lecture: a thorough command of the subject matter, well organized chapters with superbly detailed lessons, plus excellent stories which support each bit of information. Here you have it all: A Systema master, who also has psychology of combat degree, plus he is a master instructor--He really knows how to teach this stuff. I particularly like that he gives instructions of exercises, with some details left to individual interpretation, but with an excellent explanation of the rationale and benefits of that particular exercise. This is a book that people will read over and over, now, and in the future, and they'll probably find meaningful tips that can only be discovered as the readers mature in their understanding of the universe that is Systema. Probably the best Systema book.

This book is great. I puchased it months ago and Im still reading it. Not one to just breeze through, at least not for me. Many topics are covered. All pros and no cons in my opinion. There are so few Systema books in print and in English for that matter. I own quiete a few (English and Russian). Being Systema is open to interpretation and application as far as its teachings go, different authors/instructors will have a different take. There are many reasons for that, previous MA backround, expierence level, cultural backround, personal beliefs ..etc. What I'm getting at is, not all Systema materials are of the same quality. Maj. Komarov is well qualified to teach and write about Systema. Anyone interested will learn a lot from this book!

Excellent martial arts and combat manual.

This is an extremely well organized and detailed manual of Systema as practiced at the Systema Headquarters in Toronto, Canada.

I personally found Chapter Two, "Psychological Work as a part of Mastering Systema" to be particularly valuable. Major Komorov, by the way, has a PhD in Combat Psychology.

The use of breath training as a key component of Systema training is clearly explained.

I anticipate that some readers will be upset by the absence of photos and drawings. My personal response would be that these are not essential if you read carefully and/or find a good training group. It also keeps the price of the book down.

There are some personal anecdotes and testimonials in the book, a practice I personally don't like, but these seem to be fewer and more restrained, than in some other martial arts books I've read.

A not-so-great execution of a great concept

I received "Systema Manual" with more than a little eagerness. A manual of the Russian martial art Systema, the martial art that makes a practitioner of it look like the Grim Reaper doing ballet. Unfortunately, the reality of the book, and of the training presented, were far from what I had hoped. I mean no disrespect to the Major, or to Russian martial arts, but the book could be boiled down to a paragraph of theory, and the rest of its material cast aside.

The book says so much, yet teaches and imparts so little. More effort could have been put into the book to discuss proper execution and performance of technique, and perhaps to include photographs of these techniques. The "Manual" could easily be double its current page count. If the book were able to stand on its own, then I would give it a 5 star rating, and rave about it. As it stands now, the book mentions techniques and training, but only describes with sufficient detail a handful of the techniques and training out of the many presented. The book seems nothing more than an appetizer to a much greater main course of seminars, books, and videos. Also, I am not sure if Major Komarov intended the book to be presented in its present form, but the editing and formatting of the book also could have been more professional.

If the emphasis of a potential reader is purely on fighting, although Systema itself may include a deeper level of training than what is provided in this book, the book's wisdom can be imparted as follows, and for free: consciously breathe while learning any style through constant repetition of techniques and the core muscles and physiological principles of these techniques so as to be acclimated to their use by and on us, and combine this with reflection and "meditation" on our various responses to fighting in a training environment. If the preceding is done, then we will be able to act and react as needed in a fight. Systema itself as a martial art no doubt takes a greater level of training and understanding than what is found in the paragraph above. This book is just not the book to impart that understanding.

I would say that if a person wants to learn some new principles of fighting to add to their current regimen, then the book is a decent buy. If a person wants to learn Systema, the book is ill equipped to help anyone learn the style.
